The quickest way to test camera suitability is to see if Windows XP can control it.
To perform this test, you will need:
- Your camera.
- A normal PC running Windows XP
- USB Cable for your camera
Step 1
Before testing, the camera may need to be switched to PTP Mode.
Some cameras switch automatically.
Some cameras have an option in their setup menus to choose between between 'PTP'
and 'Mass Storage' modes.
Consult the manual for your camera to check what is required.

This is an example of the USB mode screen on a Nikon Camera. |
 |
Step 2
Connect the camera to a Windows XP computer. Once connected Choose 'Start' then 'My Computer'.
|
If the camera is operating in PTP mode, it will show up as a camera icon under My
Computer. The name of the camera appears next to the icon as shown here for a Nikon
L4. |
If the camera is not in PTP mode,
it will show up as a removable drive only. A camera that connects this way cannot
be controlled unless it can be switched to PTP mode. |
 |
 |
Step 3
Open the camera icon which showed up under My Computer. (double click)
On the left of the window, look for an option "Take a new picture":

If Windows XP provides the option to take a picture, the URBI interface should work
with your camera.
If the option is not there, then it is quite likely this camera is not suitable.
